Meet Hawaii's best dentists: Dr. Jeffrey S.D. Sonson, Dr. Ivan Colón, Dr. Keri Anne Wong, Dr. Erik Dunkelberger

Dr. Jeffrey S.D. Sonson, DDS
Dr. Sonson has been in the dental field since 1997, graduating from Heidelberg College and the University of Pacific Dental School. A Hawaii-native, he opened his own practice in the heart of Kailua on the island of Oahu in 2001. He is dedicated to offering exceptional service and care to his patients through continuous education and the use of state-of-the-art dental technology.

Dr. Sonson is an active member of the Prestigious Terry Tanaka Prosthetic Study Club, the Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies, the Hawaii Dental Association and the Honolulu County Dental Society and treasurer for the Hawaii Dental Association Foundation. Specializing in cosmetic bleaching, Invisalign® Invisible Braces, dental implants and more, Dr. Sonson is eager to transform beautiful smiles.  In his free time he enjoys golf, surfing and hot yoga.

Dr. Ivan Colón, dental professional in Kailua, HI

Dr. Ivan Colón, DDS

Dr. Colón graduated from Southern Adventist University with a Bachelor's degree in Biology. He then attended Loma Linda University School of Dentistry where he earned his DDS. degree. Dr. Colón’s family – originally from New York and Massachusetts – has lived in Africa, Russia, France, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Michigan. In 2013, Dr. Colón joined the Kailua Dental Care family after he and his wife, a physician assistant, decided to make the move to Hawaii and start a family in Kailua. Prior to moving to the islands, Dr. Colón was a clinical instructor in fixed prosthodontics at LLUSD.


He is a member and Secretrary of the Honolulu County Dental Society, and a member of the Hawaii Dental Association, and the American Dental Association. In his free time he enjoys hiking, surfing, and landscape photography.

Dr. Samuel Simmons, DDS

Dr. Simmons earned his Bachelor of Science degree from UC Santa Barbara in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology. He then attended University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry in San Francisco where he graduated with High Honors, earning membership in TKO honors society and OKU honors society. 

Dr. Simmons is a member of the Hawaii Dental Association and the American Dental Association and enjoys surfing, hiking, cycling, and golfing in his free time.

Dr. Erik Dunkelberger, DDS 
Dr. Dunkelberger joined the Kailua Dental Care family in 2017. Prior to dentistry, he attended the University of Maryland, earning a Bachelor's degree in Zoology, and went on to work in Biotechnology, Computer Networking & Security, and Tech Recruiting in areas such as San Francisco, Dallas, Atlanta, and Tokyo. Influenced by his father, who is a Pediatric Dentist, he decided to leave the tech field and pursue a career in dentistry, allowing him to uniquely combine his technology background with patient care. Dr. Dunkelberger attended the University of Southern California to earn his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. He then served in the United States Navy as a Dental Officer at the Marine Corps Base Hawaii in Kaneohe and at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, WA.

He is a member of the Honolulu County Dental Society, the Hawaii Dental Association, and the American Dental Association. He is an avid kiteboarder and also enjoys surfing, hiking, and spearfishing.

Dr. Lauren N. Lau, DDS

Dr. Lau earned her Bachelors of Science degree in Biology from Seattle University. She worked as a dental assistant in a pediatric dental office before attending and earning her DDS degree from the University of Washington School of Dentistry. She left her home state of Washington to follow her fiance back to Hawai’i and completed an Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency through NYU Langone at Waimanalo Health Center.


Dr. Lau is highly involved in the Hawaii Dental Association, and is a member of the Honolulu County Dental Society and American Dental Association. In her free time she enjoys going to the beach, cooking and baking.
